Backend Engineer · Python & FastAPI
Dylan McKay.
Building APIs
that scale.
M.S. Software Engineering graduate specializing in backend systems, RESTful API design, and full-stack Python applications. Based in Indiana, open to remote and on-site opportunities.
About Me
The person behind the code.
I'm a backend engineer focused on building well-structured APIs and full-stack applications using Python and FastAPI. I recently completed my M.S. in Software Engineering from Western Governors University.
My work centers on designing systems that are clean, documented, and built to last - from database schema decisions to deployment. I care about understanding why something is built a certain way, not just making it work.
I'm currently seeking my first professional engineering role where I can contribute to a team, grow quickly, and ship real software.

Projects
Selected work.
Three projects built from scratch and documented end to end.
A self-hostable webhook delivery platform built in Python with FastAPI. Automatic retries and backoff, HMAC signatures, circuit breaker for dead endpoints, and more.
A full-stack shortwave-inspired chatroom app built with FastAPI, React, and PostgreSQL. Features JWT authentication, real-time WebSocket messaging, and a Redis-powered presence system to track online users. Deployed on Railway with Docker.
